Mangroves populate the mangroves of Madagascar. Madagascar.

Mangrove is a catch-all term for the mangrove forests that populate our shores and are home to an immense biodiversity. The structure of mangroves protects shorelines from swell, hurricanes and tsunamis. They are also veritable fishponds, producing large quantities of fishery resources. There are three types of mangrove:

  • The first is the seaside mangrove, populated by red mangroves that can grow up to 8 meters high. They have developed an aerial root system in the form of a stilt (rhizophore) that enables them to breathe and remain stable on the mud. These trees are “on stilts”.
  • Then there’s the shrubby mangrove, populated by black mangroves growing in the mud.
  • Finally, the high mangrove, populated by white and grey mangroves. Their roots protrude vertically above the ground and water, like snorkels, to ensure that the plant can breathe even when its roots are submerged by the tides.

The mangrove is the king tree of the mangrove, a fragile ecosystem typical of tropical coastlines. Situated at the boundary between land and sea, mangrove species are subject to severe environmental constraints:

  • soft, unstable, oxygen-poor soil
  • repeated temporary submersion by salt water during tides.

Our organic mangrove honey comes from one of these three species.
