History of the Savoie :<\/h2>\n

Savoy was reunited with Italy under the Treaty of Turin in 1860.<\/p>\n

From August 1859 to January 1860, Savoy was uncertain about its future. On February 26, 1860, the French government ruled out the idea of an independent Savoy. <\/p>\n

It will therefore be attached to France:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The preliminary agreement recognizing the cession of Savoy and Nice to France is signed in Turin. 12<\/a><\/u> March<\/u> 1860<\/a>. The principle of a referendum was adopted. <\/p>\n

Consequently, the duchy’s divisional councils met and decided to send a delegation of 41 Savoisians in favor of annexation on March 21, 1860.<\/p>\n

The Treaty of Annexation, known as the Treaty of Turin, was signed and published on March 24, 1860.<\/p>\n

  1. The first three articles set out the conditions for this annexation:\n
      \n
    1. First of all, there is no reference to \u201cannexation\u201d but to \u201creunion\u201d. Hence the call for Savoyard assent and the organization of a referendum. <\/li>\n
    2. The neutralized zone of northern Savoy, guaranteed by the 1860 Treaty of Turin, was maintained.<\/li>\n
    3. Finally, the borders of the two states are determined by a joint commission, taking into account the configuration of the mountains and the need for defence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
